# Why CESCIL exists

## What we heard

As we shaped CESCIL's direction, we listened to emergency managers, leaders in fire and emergency medicine, researchers, and funders across Canada. We heard the same things again and again: crises stacking up, no time to catch up, and limited ways to see what others are doing. Many described feeling alone and unsure whether they were doing things right. Practitioners have insights worth sharing and questions worth asking, but few places to bring them, and even fewer to do so candidly.

When we asked one emergency manager to describe their ideal future, they simply described one where people share what they know.

We believe the people closest to the work know it best, and no one should have to feel they're facing this work alone.

### Our approach

CESCIL's mandate is to support innovation in emergency services.

For us, innovation means finding better ways of doing the work. It can include new technology, but most often it means adapting something that worked somewhere else to where you are.

This kind of innovation depends on the conditions around people: time to look beyond their own work, trusted peers to think with, and room to talk honestly about what’s working and what isn’t. Good ideas travel through relationships, and people are more likely to try something new when they feel equipped and connected.

To create those conditions, we help practitioners find:

### Relationships:

connections with peers who understand their work, and with people who see similar problems from different angles

### Knowledge:

what others are trying, what’s working, and what makes it possible

### Tools:

existing resources that fit the realities of the work, and how others have used them

Together, these help good ideas spread, make useful resources easier to discover, and connect people who might otherwise work in isolation.

## Our position

CESCIL is a not-for-profit that isn't part of any one agency, discipline, or organization. This position makes room for open conversation, work-in-progress ideas, and connections across the sector. Rather than duplicating the important work already happening, we look for ways to support it and connect people with it.

## Where this leads

Over time, we hope the stories and conversations we share will build a network across emergency services, connecting people who wouldn’t otherwise meet. What we learn from practitioners, including what they need, what’s working, and what makes it possible, can also help shape what gets funded, built, and bought, so new solutions fit the realities of the work.

We’re working towards an emergency services sector where practitioners are connected and equipped, and no one has to figure it out alone.

We expect CESCIL to grow and change as we listen and learn.
